Allan married girlfriend Kerry Edwards yesterday. And after a quick change from his robes into formal attire, he then became his son’s best man too. Father Weatherby, of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Hanley, said: “Although one of his friends stood next to him in church, Allan asked me to be his best man. I feel honoured.

“It is the first time I have been a best man and I’m pleased it’s for Allan. “The speech will be interesting, not just for me, but both of us.” The 51-year-old added: “I took it for granted Allan would have a church wedding, but it was always his decision. “I’m glad to have been there for him on his special day, it’s just a shame it has taken so long.

” Allan and Kerry met through friends as teenagers and have been together almost 11 years. The pair, from Bradeley, entered The Sentinel’s Win a Dream Wedding competition last year to try to get the big day they had always imagined. They beat off competition from more than 170 couples to make it to the final, but came second.

Upset at getting so far but leaving the competition without a wedding day booked, Allan promised Kerry they would set a date. And their wedding has now taken place just over a year after the competition finished. Speaking outside the church after marrying Kerry, painter and decorator Allan, aged 28, said: “I had always wanted my dad to conduct the ceremony and we had always talked about it. “It is nice to keep it in the family and I think he was pleased to be asked.” Kerry, aged 27, a theatre practitioner, said: “I’m relieved and overwhelmed to be married.

“The wedding competition was a bit of fun, but it also gave us the final push to get married.” Allan and Kerry invited 100 guests to see them tie the knot yesterday afternoon. A further 70 people were expected to join them for an evening reception at Rookery Hall, in Nantwich.
